Sell your codebase on Moatless

List a codebase you've built, set a price, and get paid when people buy it. Moatless handles checkout, delivers the code to buyers over git, and pays you through Stripe.

How it works

  1. 01

    List your codebase

Connect a repository with the Moatless GitHub App, or use a git URL, with an access token if the repository is private. Add a description, screenshots, its categories and tech stack, and the services it needs to run.

  2. 02

    Set your prices

Choose a one-time price for the codebase. You can also offer a subscription to updates, charged monthly or yearly, but only for periods in which you publish a new release.

  3. 03

    Publish releases

Each release is built from a branch, tag, or commit in your repository. With GitHub connected, publishing a GitHub release or pushing a tag can publish one automatically. Buyers who get it, such as subscribers, are emailed that it's out, with your release notes.

  4. 04

    Get paid

Buyers pay at checkout, and 90% of each payment, less Stripe's fee for processing it, is sent to your Stripe account as it's made. Moatless pays it out to your bank every Friday, once it's at least 10 days old.

What buyers get

Buyers get the code as a git repository they can change and deploy. Subscribers get each new release as an ordinary commit, so they can merge it into their own changes. Each purchase gives one person or organization a license to use the code in what they build, but not to resell or redistribute it. If your code has a license file of its own, like a LICENSE.md with your own terms, it's shown on your listing's page instead. You keep ownership of your code.

The full details are in the Terms of Service.

Reviews

Buyers can rate and review what they've bought, and you can reply to each review. Your seller page shows your codebases and your ratings across all of them.

Selling with your coding agent

Your coding agent can do most of the work with the Moatless skill: it drafts the listing from your code, takes screenshots, and publishes releases, and checks with you before anything is published.

Payments and payouts
  • Moatless uses Stripe Connect. When you set up payouts, Moatless creates a Stripe account for you, and Stripe asks for your identity and bank details directly, so Moatless never sees them.
  • Moatless is the merchant of record: buyers pay Moatless, and Stripe sends your share to your Stripe account as each payment is made. You keep 90% of every sale and subscription payment, less Stripe's fee for processing the payment, and Moatless keeps 10%. With a founder code, Moatless's fee is lower, and Moatless may pay Stripe's fee too.
  • Moatless pays out your balance every Friday, for sales made at least 10 days earlier, so refunds and disputes can be settled first. The Sell page shows your next payout and what's on hold, and your bank details are in your Stripe dashboard, which you open from there.
  • Sales tax is Moatless's responsibility as the merchant of record, and it's never taken out of your share. Moatless also pays the part of Stripe's fee that comes from the tax.
  • Purchases are non-refundable, except when a buyer couldn't get the code because of a problem on Moatless's side, was charged twice, or is owed a refund by law. If a sale is refunded, your share of it is taken back, along with the Stripe processing fee you paid on it, which Stripe doesn't return. If a buyer wins a dispute, Stripe's dispute fee is taken too. When a refund is Moatless's mistake, Moatless pays these fees. If that leaves your Stripe balance negative, Stripe may debit your bank account to cover it.
  • Your listings go on sale once your Stripe account is approved.
